Ah, January: the start of a new year and a month bursting with potential. For some, it’s a time to get active, plan for the year ahead, and hit the ground running in 2026. For others, it’s a much-needed time to de-stress from the chaotic holiday season. No matter what’s on your calendar for January, we’re big proponents of taking time to relax and refresh. Here in Lake Hartwell Country, there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in some peace and quiet – for a day, a weekend, or even longer. Read on to learn more about our favorite ways to rejuvenate this January.

The Road Less Traveled

If you’re seeking tranquility, there’s nothing better than a winter hike. Of course, it can be chilly, and nature is far from being in full bloom. But when it comes to a private afternoon on your own, you can’t beat a path through Lake Hartwell Country’s beautiful backcountry. Layer up so you’ll be able to enjoy the brisk temperatures at any stage of your walk, whether you need to shed a jacket after a tricky uphill climb or bundle up while pausing to enjoy the views.

And yes – you can still enjoy the views in winter! As you trek through a forest, the sparse foliage means you can see much further around you, encircling you with the awe-inspiring feeling of being alone in nature. Plus, while waterfalls may not yet be thundering from the late-spring rains, most are still a constant trickle down into a crisp, clear brook: a relaxing ambience to lose yourself in.

Peace After the Presents

Whoever first said Christmas brought “peace on Earth” clearly never had children during the holidays. As joyful as it is to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s with loved ones, it can certainly be an exhausting stretch of the year. For parents or grandparents who need a little bit of peace and quiet, a weekend getaway to one of Lake Hartwell Country’s cabins or B&Bs is the perfect remedy.

One site that offers plenty of solitude is Mountain Rest Cabins & Campground, which can cater to whatever kind of camping (or glamping) you want to do. Those with their own RVs can pull up in the comfort of their own space and set up camp. Or, if you’re looking for a completely stress-free weekend, book one of their fully furnished rental cabins. It’s the perfect place to cozy up next to an evening bonfire or stretch out under a blanket next to a softly babbling stream.

For a little less of a rustic retreat, consider booking a bed and breakfast. Most of Lake Hartwell Country’s B&Bs are in historic homes, giving a luxuriously vintage feel while providing modern amenities. Pendleton is home to three B&Bs – Liberty Hall Bed and Breakfast, Inn at Magnolia Hill, and Rocky Retreat Bed and Breakfast – so you can find a room that meets your needs and your availability any time of year.

Spa Day Getaway

We fully believe that a day in nature is a great way to reset – but there’s nothing wrong with a little self-care at a spa, either. Extra-cold days are the ideal time to trade in your hiking boots for a lush pair of slippers and swap your jacket for a robe. Though there are countless places to treat yourself, we recommend finding a locally owned spa to support Lake Hartwell Country’s small business owners. Some of our must-visits include Lilia Day Spa in downtown Anderson and Brownstone Spa & Boutique in Pickens. From a quick mani-pedi to a whole day of pampering, you’ll leave feeling ready to take on 2026!

Ring in the new year with a little “me time” in Lake Hartwell Country. Whether you’re an introvert needing to recharge after a bustling holiday season or want to spend some private, quality time with a loved one, there are lots of great destinations to get away from it all here in Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee Counties. What’s your plan for January?
